Karla’s Surprise Cancer Diagnosis – Wellness Program

Turning 50 is supposed to be a year of celebration, travel, and new beginnings. For Karla Stephens, this pivotal milestone was meant to be a gap year filled with exploration. She had planned extensive travels across Europe with her husband and their 18 year old son, looking forward to showing him the places where she had once worked, including Rome and Budapest.

For years, Karla hadn’t been feeling well, but her symptoms were consistently attributed to minor issues. She was told she simply needed to work on her core strength, get into better shape, or find the root cause of why she was constantly exhausted and sleeping.

Then, a sudden trip to the hospital for severe back pain changed everything.

Doctors delivered a shocking reality: Karla had Stage 4 breast cancer. The disease had already metastasized aggressively throughout her bones, her spine, her liver, and her lymph nodes, requiring immediate, intensive treatment.

Overturning the Assumptions of Cancer

Like many people, Karla’s understanding of breast cancer was shaped by public awareness campaigns, stories of standard surgeries, and survivors who had a breast removed and were pronounced cured. When she asked her medical team when they would remove her breast, the response was another unexpected blow.

Because the cancer was already Stage 4 and had spread throughout her body, the doctors explained that it was too serious to risk surgery.

“This past year has been one massive learning curve,” Karla shares, reflecting on the profound shift in her perspective. “Not only about cancer, but about life in general. How do I now want to spend my new kind of life, and what is my new normal?”

Discovering Holistic Support and Healing

Stepping into the unknown world of advanced cancer treatment, Karla was completely unfamiliar with the support systems and services available to patients. That was when she connected with wellness services, including alternative therapies like Reiki and energy work.

While open minded about energy fields, Karla found that the regular visits from a wellness practitioner named Anna provided profound relief. Through targeted breathing exercises and energy work, Karla found a vital way to calm her nervous system and manage the intense anxiety that comes with a life limiting illness.

“Once you experience it and you let yourself open up to it, it’s a very healing experience,” she explains.

Embracing Authenticity and Finding Blessings

Processing a diagnosis that is not curable and facing the reality of chronic pain is an incredibly heavy journey. Throughout it all, Karla has committed to being completely authentic, choosing not to idealize her past or pretend that life was perfect before cancer.

Surprisingly, she notes that facing a palliative state has brought unexpected perspective and clarity.

“There have been things that it’s brought me that are really blessings,” Karla says. “It really makes you focus on what’s important. In order to heal, you’ve got to get rid of the negative space to make way for peace and strength.”

Navigating a complex diagnosis requires more than just clinical interventions. For Karla, the emotional, mental, and holistic support provided by community wellness programs has made all the difference. Having a dedicated person to talk to, learn coping strategies from, and share time with has provided a priceless anchor during the most challenging chapter of her life.
