Kids Anticipatory Grief & Bereavement (Ages 0-18)

All About Kids Anticipatory Grief & Bereavement Support for Children and Youth Ages 0-18

One-on-one support for children and youth who are coping with the palliative illness of someone important to them, or grieving after a death.

  • Provide grief literacy to young people and parents
  • Help to identify, express and manage emotions
  • Support with developing coping strategies
  • Opportunities to create memories through legacy work

How the program works:

After a client signs up for this program, our Children’s Grief Counsellor will visit them to provide one-to-one support, which can include games, art, and play to facilitate conversation and connection.

Each session is an hourlong and can be held in the client’s home, but virtual sessions and visits at our Head Office are also options. The client can have six sessions for Bereavement and as needed for Anticipatory Grief. Parent participation will be at the discretion of the client.

This program is free to residents of the Halton Region.

When to refer for Anticipatory Grief Counselling:

  • Family member has received a palliative diagnosis
  • Parents/ caregivers are worried or reluctant to talk to kids about the diagnosis
  • Child or youth is struggling to cope with news of diagnosis
  • As soon as possible – connecting with a counsellor earlier than later is ideal

When to refer for Bereavement Counselling:

  • Child or youth has experienced the death of someone important to them
  • Parent/ caregiver is noticing concerning behaviours post loss
  • Parent/ caregiver is seeking information about parenting through grief
