Pain Assessment and Management
Learn how to evaluate and manage pain in the context of someone with a life-limiting illness
This course provides nurses with the foundational knowledge and skills to understand and apply effective pain assessment and management in the context of a palliative approach to care. This course is designed for NPs, RNs, and RPNs working in any setting in the Halton/Peel region.
Course Objectives
Following the completion of the 2-day pain education course and practical applications, the learner should be able to:
- Define and describe pain in the context of whole person care
- Identify barriers to effective pain management
- Complete a comprehensive pain assessment
- Differentiate between different types of pain
- Describe the principles of pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of pain
- Describe opioid and non-opioid medications used in managing pain
- Apply conversion ratios between different opioids and routes of administration
- Manage common adverse effects of opioids
- Evaluate the effectiveness of pain management interventions
Disclaimer: This course does not focus on chronic primary pain. However, there are some similar guiding principles in pain assessment and management in the context of caring for someone with a life limiting illness.
Program Expectations
To receive a Certificate of Completion, learners will need to:
- Attend both full-day in-person sessions from 8:45 to 4:15 PM.
- Successfully complete two written practical assignments
